As the corporate media abandons journalism's traditional role of democratic watchdog in favor of pandering to corporate interests, democracy depends increasingly on the emergence of predominantly nonprofit independent, often web based, media outlet's. A growing number of such outlets are sources of news, investigative reporting, ideas, and information rarely found in corporate media outlets sensitive to the interests of their owners and advertisers.

The following are links to some of these outlets:

TomPaine.com is a media watchdog service that tracks the corporate press on a daily basis to draw attention to important stories and to offer facts and commentary to expose bias and misrepresentations.
